MALE PATTERN BALDNESS

Natural hair loss in a man, or male pattern baldness is basically due to male hormones, especially testosterone. If the man has inherited the gene for hair loss, then some of the testosterone is formed by some of the hair roots into a derivative called Dihydrotestosterone. It is this Dihydrotestosterone that is responsible for hair loss.

Male pattern baldness occurs in a variety of forms in about 66% of adult males at some point throughout their lives. It affects the central and frontal area of the scalp, and is characterized by receding hair from the lateral sides of the forehead ("receding hairline" or "receding brow"). A bald patch on top of the head may also develop.

The hair loss will occur slowly over the years and can start anytime after puberty, but more likely after the age of twenty. It is hereditary, so there will be a family history of hair loss.
